Finally, there is a little nip in the air and it feels like Christmas. All the more reason to get out and take care of that shopping list. Bonus: there are some great sales practically everywhere you go (the one positive outcome of this economic situation). I think it is safe to say every store has some kind of sale or incentive going on, but here are the couple I have heard about…

Banks Fine Art is offering special pricing on originals, antiques, and living artist works. Might make for a great gift for the art connaisseur in the fam, if you can figure out how to wrap it.

CB2 is offering free shipping on orders of $100+ now through December 22. Trust me, you can get about 20 things for $100 at CB2. Their prices are amazing. For example, these lumiere candleholders are $4.95-$5.95 each.

As I mentioned Wednesday, Uptown Country Home is offering 40% off everything in the entire store through Saturday. Everything. Craziness.

Last but not least, Crate & Barrel is having a red, white, and green sale. If your house is looking a little bare (mine!), stock up on Christmas decor at slashed prices, like this Red Berry Candle Ring ($6.95).

Splurge vs. Steal: Croc Party Trays

Now more than ever, saving money is in style. Yes, it requires a little more effort to search around for the best deal, but it is oh so worth it when you come upon a steal like this. I am loving croc trays right now. I ooh and awe over the trays at Madison every time I go in the store. They double as a desk ornament or a party tray. Let’s be honest though. It is pure insanity to spend $230 on something like this. Z Gallerie’s Everglades Round Tray is a great alternative. It is super-stylish in lime green and a steal at $29.95.

The Travels of Joseph Minton and Kevin Peavy

Just to keep everyone properly green with envy, here is Joe Minton and Kevin Peavy’s travel schedule. They are off to London with Betty Gertz for Christmas; of course, there are probably visits with Jerry Hall, Desmond Guinness, and other notables. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Queen invites them for tea, Joe is the closest thing to our Prince of Dallas as anyone I can imagine. Then, they must don their warmest coats and hats and be off to St Petersburg for the annual Czar’s Ball, followed by a private tour of the Hermitage Museum. Then on to Moscow. Okay, I have a really good idea. How about I just come along, take notes and create your own personal travel diary. I’ll even carry bags. Joe, Kevin - good idea, huh?

Michelle Nussbaumer has just returned from Los Angeles where she was working on a project for Veranda magazine at the Greystone Mansion. She met Martin Lawrence Bullard, one of AD’s “100 Top Designers in the World”, and will soon be carrying his signature candles and fabrics. With names like Ottomania and Hindu Temple, Ceylon et Cie is sure to smell as exotic as it looks. I can’t wait to see the fabrics like this Sultan’s Garden in traditional Indian patterns. Just as long as there’s not one with Mumbai in the name. I couldn’t stand it, my daughter was going to Mumbai on Friday for Live Earth India. Some of her company’s security had gone ahead and they were among the hostages. She was on the phone with them all day Wednesday, listening to gunfire and crying. I still love all things Indian, but I’m thankful she wasn’t there.

I discover most of my best home design ideas in hotels. I still love the bathrooms at the W Dallas with their open construction and floating vanity mirrors, breaking down the barrier between bathroom and bedroom. My new favorite inspiration resource is The World’s Coolest Hotel Rooms by Bill Tikos. It’s page after page of stunning rooms and suites. Make sure to check out the Hotel Fox in Copenhagen on page 164. It’s so cool. You can pick up your own copy at Borders and while you’re at it, get the Design Hotels Yearbook 2008. More great ideas.

The Belmont Hotel in Oak Cliff is already one of our favorites - 1940’s Dilbeck with the very best view of the Dallas skyline. They just keep getting better with a new partnership with Bunkhouse Management of Hotel San Jose fame in Austin. Look for it to be featured in all kinds of national travel magazines soon. And if you’re the gaming sort, they now have “Gaming at the Belmont” every Tuesday night in the cozy candlelit lobby. How about a few friends for Monopoly and Belmontinis. You can celebrate being a real estate tycoon - probably the only way any of us will be buying real estate is with Monopoly money.

Tuesday Trend: Retro Revival

The past two home decor boutiques to open up in Dallas have been vintage stores. First, Henderson Avenue got Sputnik Modern, an off-beat yet beyond cool spot for furniture from the 1930s to as recent as the 1980s. Next, come stelladallas (Lovers Ln.) to the mix. The entire store is not composed of vintage finds, yet all of the furniture most certainly is. Dealing mostly with local vendors, stelladallas is doing its part to be “green” and give dated furniture a new breath of life. This “retro revival” testifies as to why it is such a struggle to find a parking spot at Again & Again (a long-time establishment for vintage, re-upholstered furniture).

Shopping vintage means you and your besties won’t all have the same home accessories form the same cookie-cutter retail outlet. Yours will be different: custom, conversational, and in a way, green. Just like Mom always said, “Everything that is old becomes new again.”
