Working for an award-winning, world-class shelter publication like D Home, you’d think I’d know the answer to my question: where can I find stylish tile for my kitchen backsplash that won’t break the bank? Alas, I don’t. My partner in crime says I have expensive taste and I should simply crack open the wallet and indulge. But I’d like to shop around a bit. Plus, I’d love to hear what our fellow D Homers have to say. So once again: where can I score some beautiful tile that doesn’t demand a second mortgage? Comments are on and appreciated.
You can never go wrong with subway tile - which is pretty affordable. Of course, it’d help if you posted something you like so that the readers can know what look you are after.
I’m not sure if they would have what you’re looking for, but a store called Floor and Decor has VERY affordable prices on all tiles, and they have quite a variety of backsplash pieces. There is a store located off 35 and Royal and the staff is great.
I just got marble tile for an entire shower from the Habitat store.
Look at the “Avalon” series at Ann Sacks–it’s a rectangular tile that comes in various widths and colors.
Also, check out “Interceramic Tile & Stone” on Forest, over by LBJ & 35–they have some decent deals.
Hmmmmm, most of your granite shops have an area where they stack surplus pieces. A lot of the time they have to pay to have that stuff hauled off to the landfill.
If you have or can rent a tile saw you can have a ball creating your own patterns and color combinations with real deal granite.
You’re talking work, but fun work, and you get to be creative.
You can talk to Tony or Katie at Lonestar Granite in Wylie. They’re great.
I am currently building a house and been to most of the tile places in Dallas. The thing that I found that made a tile job cool but affordable was to use inexpensive tile (ie subway)and mix it with more high-end expensive accents…ie Ann Sacks.
Have fun and go with what you like!
I’d also see what Seconds + Surplus has and it does change week to week. We redid a kitchen for about $11.000.00 total and i KNOW we saved probably 80% on tile. Also, if you LOVE this house, we just put in procelin (sp?) In a new bath and it looks almost like limestone and is cheap. I’m not sure it would work as a backsplash with grease + grime. Not that you’re dirty! Three words: Seal Thy Grout!
