Who Says Dreams Don’t Come True?

The Trophy Husband was suspiciously AWOL from our marital bed yesterday morning.  I suspected he was dashing to Target to select a gnome at the behest of The Spawn. clive in hydrageas

I was right.

We had a fabulous Mother’s Day.  I planted a lilac bush at my mother’s house.  But Saturday night…was all about Prom.  Whew!  I am exhausted from being honored all day.

It’s looking at me. Stop! It’s scaring me. Please. Tell him to stop. Oh great, now he’s just glaring in my direction! Thanks.

wow, for some reason i thought lilac bushes didn’t grow down here

There is a story behind the lilac bush, and the darn thing better grow… My mother grew up in basically a sharecropper shack on the oil field outside of Burkburnett, Texas. Amazingly, lilac bushes grew wild there, huge and beautiful. They survived drought, floods, salination for exploration, and tornados, and they still stand today, some over 30 feet. Her most favorite memories of childhood were the scent of those bushes. As I was growing up, I have vivid memories of my mother making sudden swerves and slamming on the brakes in her harvest gold Impala, usually in April, and always due to a lilac bush in bloom. I did some research, and found a variety, available at Lowe’s a dwarf Korean variety, maximum height and width, about 5 feet. It needs 6 hours of full sun a day. As luck woul have it, my mother has a spot tucked in the corner of a privacy fence. Perfection.

we had a lilac bush in my yard when i grew up (not here). it is my all-time favorite flower. we would hide in the bush and make lovely little purses from the leaves.

i was in tom thumb this weekend and they had a big flower display (go figure) with a massive table of $7.99 hyacinths. i never realized how similar it was to lilacs

i will light a candle now to the prosperity of your lilac bush

My daughter made me a candle, a picture frame, and a birdhouse…. may she never ever ever EVER make me a garden gnome!!

But I’m glad you got what you wanted. Beauty is in the eye of the margarita-holder… or something like that.

Trophy husband being AWOL from your narital bed may have been a blessing, since he was clearly doing something productive (and romantic). He really does have a what it takes.

You are making those of us that did not plant lilac or an other kind of bush for Mother’s Day feel kind of guilty and crappy. But we are very happy that you and your Mom had such great memories to access for this very important day, and that TH and Spawn were all part of the day.

It is very hard for a day like Mother’s day to get an recognition at all when it falls into Prom and removal of braces week. It does sound like you all had “balance” in your life last week and everyone was at peace in the household.
