A Reader over at DallasDirt asked me this question, and I pose it to you: has anyone heard that Savannah College of Art and Design is choosing between Dallas and San Diego? If so, are we doing anything to nudge them our way, nudge nudge? Apparently they have worked preservation miracles in Savannah.
Candy,
This addition to Dallas would be a very positive contribution. Usually privately held, art schools are wealthy, their influence upon their student body is huge, and cultural advantages spring forth, not to mention the sheer numbers that might stay and offer talent as graduated citizens.
You are correct that someone should nurture their interest–and in your real estate corridor, I would suggest tapping some developers who would certainly be able to benefit from selling rental units.
Art students want something to see, feel, and experience in the cities they join. With all the architecture and design growth in the city, this might be a good time to attract the students of an art school–if someone would just make the case.
Candy — Since I teach Intellectual Property at an art school in Dallas, in addition to my law practice, I have some interest in this. I do recall seeing an article, blog post, or something similar, on the Net within the last six weeks or so. If I recall correctly, it was a story to the effect that the Savannah College was considering Dallas, as one of about four cities it was considering, for expanding. I’ve seen nothing further on it since. Best to you and Walter, including your considering a new home.–Doug
Last I heard Dallas had made it onto a very short list…of only two cities.
I’m about to pursue a master’s at SCAD in Savannah in Historic Preservation and would love to see them come to Dallas! Here’s hoping! — Susan
