Shop at Texas Stadium

Once in awhile, I like to catch the local news–mostly just to get an update on Finfrock’s cough. But last night, I stayed put (I couldn’t find the remote, if you must know).  I happened to catch the story about one Texas Stadium becoming an outlet mall. Makes sense. All of Arlington can shop at Texas Stadium while those in Dallas with gazillions in disposable income can head to Arlington for the Cowboy games.

On The Road Again: DWR’s Airstream

outside.jpgI already mentioned architect/designer Chris Deam’s Good Design and ICFF Editor’s awards for an Airstream trailer. Well, here it is. He gutted the interior, left the iconic aluminum shell, and created a special edition trailer for Design Within Reach. Priced a little under 50K, this home-on-wheels comes with a Nelson Ball Clock, Tom Dixon coatrack, Heller dinnerware, eco-friendly flooring, two Tripolina chairs, and the convenience of changing your view.

Dungeons in Highland Park?

I’ve been out walking again, uh-oh, and noticing some new building trends.  I’m not giving any addresses here, so not to worry. The latest scraped corner lots are beginning to look like the foundations are being dug halfway to China - huge, multi-roomed subterranean  holes  are being built to house under-ground garages, wine-cellars, work out rooms, and maybe dungeons.  Probably not the latter, but you never know when you might need one.  Candy, is this a new trend?

Contemporary Design Symposium

75thairstream.jpg1016_victory_park_apartments_1.jpgprada.jpg What do these designs have in common? The architects/designers behind them will be speaking from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Inwood Theater on March 29.

  1. Architect Christopher Deam, who has received numerous awards, including one for an Airstream trailer, counts Target, Herman Miller, and Kenworth and has been named a rising star by Metropolitan Home. His other magazine connection is the founder of Dwell magazine, his wife.
  2. Architect Howard Elkus led design teams for the design for Victory Park and “The House,” a master plan at Stanford University, Copley Place in Boston, and Pacific Place in Seattle.
  3. Designer Karim Rashid has clients including Nambe, Prada, and Miyake, and has designs in the permanent collections of 14 museums including the MoMA.

All this and more for $50. Send check to Dallas Architecture Forum, PO Box 596119, Dallas, TX 75359.

Neat Freaks: Survival of the Cleanest

Of course the shrinks will say we are looney — I admit to be a compulsive clean freak — but catch the line about how this is a genetic disorder that may have helped our ancestors stay alive. (Running out to buy more Lysol wipes…)
