In my search for a laptop (one home computer isn’t enough when your husband is an IT guy), I found this interesting little green one. Only the coolest thing about it is the reason why I can’t have it: when you purchase one these $200 neon numbers, named the XO Laptop, it’s not sent to you, but instead to a child in a developing country. That’s the mission of One Laptop Per Child (OLPC)—to get computers with learning programs to as many children as possible. The laptops are designed to withstand high heat and humidity and are energy efficient. To donate, go here.
Jessica and I were up at Fusion Home Fashion last week, and when we stopped by Culinary Connection, we found it empty. Turns out, it has trasloco-ed a mere 400 feet away on Bishop Street (E-10) near Cru Wine Bar (convenient planning on the part of owner Pam Vincent). If you don’t make it up there before then, stop by April 4 for the grand reopening featuring Tuscan hors d’oeuvres and vino. Buon appetito!
Haven’t had time to check out all the bells and whistles at the Stoneleigh? Make time. Today marks the opening of the Stoneleigh’s “modern Italian” restaurant Bolla Bar. Whether you’re in the market for drinks, breakfast, lunch, dinner, or all of the above, your needs can be met here. I went to a soft-opening party, and enjoyed a glass of champagne. I’m easy–I will go anywhere for free booze. That aside, I have it on good authority that the food is “oh, so amazing.” Please go, and let me know your thoughts. Maybe next time, I’ll be able to break the cycle of drunkorexia.
Politics politics politics: so who has the best house, anyway? Check it out on Dallas Dirt…
Christine and I were invited to see Maya Angleou on Saturday. And while Maya was fantastic–she’s so incredibly talented. Seeing her–listening to her poetry–always makes me question my life choices and think about doing something important. No worries. It passes, and, anyway, that’s not my beef. No, rather my frustrations lie with the Dallas patrons. I constantly forget how rude we are. At the beginning of the service (Or program. Or whatever. It seemed more like a church service than anything), we were shown a slide that rather clearly stated that the use of camera phones, flash photography, etc. was prohibited. Apparently, many people in town think that “prohibited” means “encouraged.” It doesn’t.
Martha Tiller called me last night to say that Rob Reiner joined Chelsea Clinton last night at SCENE…but alas I was on the road driving home from Johnson City and passing the LBJ Ranch about the time Martha called. Kind of freaky: Martha was Lady Bird Johnson’s press secretary. Is that an omen? Sure all went well but I would really love to see and hear the young Clinton offspring sometime. Â
Sometimes we complain about bad design in Dallas, let’s not forget there’s a lot of good design. “City by Design” is a new series of coffee table books, (we love coffee table books) about architecture and design by Brian Carabet, and he starts right here in Dallas. The focus on the book is work done by local architects and features over 50 projects including the Belmont Hotel in Oak Cliff, Nobu restaurant, and the RadioShack campus in Fort Worth. Read the DMN article here. And be proud.
