Craig Hastings, an engineer at Intellicool, told me that’s the reason his company uses an insect deterrent, a blend of citronella and lemongrass that is “totally harmless” to the environment. “Basically what it does is that it doesn’t give you the wipe-out area, but what it does is give you a barrier that lasts until it evaporates out, about a four or five hour window that insects stay away.” And if you’re thinking great, but I’ll never be able to afford one of those fancy-schmancy systems, you might be wrong. Hastings said that they are ramping up for a new product roll-out, in about 60 days they will launch a new, inexpensive line, maybe even cutting the cost of cooling/insect-controlling your backyard to half the price.
