TAOS: WHAT A SHOPPING DESTINATION

fabric-store.jpg I imagine that many of you have been teary this past week, missing my posts. (No? Well, I flatter myself.) Whether you noticed or not, I was on a holiday in the rugged and snowy (it’s true, I saw the fall’s first snow!) New Mexico mountains. Monday en route to Albuquerque, we stopped in Taos for lunch and a bit of shopping. Incredible! If you haven’t been lately, prepare to be impressed. There are still about 100 great art galleries, unique eateries, and the world’s best small independent bookstore, Moby Dickens. But there are two places: must-sees, really…

Common Thread, Uncommon Fabrics, a 14-year-old business with fabrics from all over the world, buttons, ribbons, vintage hankies, sari silk pants, etc. (Pictured at left.) I secured an embroidered Mexican wool scarf that I may wear every day this fall. And the newly opened Paper Day, across the street and with common owners, has the most exceptional cards (just ask Peggy, I bought her one with a Spanish dancer). Their gift wrap is as beautiful as designer wallpaper (see here). They had exquisite bookplates, stationery, and well, I just can’t get over their wrapping paper. If I were you, I’d book my flight now.
