Christine, having been educated on the East Coast for five years, where we return each summer, I can tell you why you were disappointed with the wares at Neimans in Boston. There is something liberating herewith: Candy’s Take on East Coast Taste:

1. Every woman shops at Talbots after cleaning up the half-price sales at
LL Bean’s Freeport, Me. outlet.
2. Home decor is purely functional.
3. Never buy antiques–inherit them.
4. No need to ever wear make-up to drive carpool. Or shop.
5. That Oriental rug is an old thing you found in your grandmother’s attic.
6. Families can share bathrooms in the hallway and will not need to undergo psychiatric counseling as a result.
7. Darn: What you do when linens and socks sprout holes.
8. Tag sales: where you buy your college kids’ dorm room furniture. On a budget.
9. Must-have for the den: knotty-pine panelling.
10. Red brick rules, preferably with ivy vines to the roofline.
